Stress Awareness Month

Stress; everybody has it in some form or another. Whether it’s worrying about that final paper you have to write or that business meeting you have to ace for your boss, it’s safe to say that we all deal with things that stress us out. One of the biggest problems with stress, outside of the psychological toll it can take, is how it can physically impact your body. Being that this month is Stress Awareness Month, we here at Advance at Home Physical Therapy in Long Island find that it’s important for everyone to know about stress and effective ways to combat it.

What is stress exactly? Stress is when your body reacts to certain events or stimuli to prepare you for trouble or an incoming threat. Adrenaline starts to pump through the body, your blood pressure rises and you feel your senses become finely tuned. In short bursts, stress is actually a good thing. It provides you with focus and allows you to plan accordingly for different situations. Chronic or long-term stress, however, creates more problems. Stress can even bring out anxiety in an individual.

For Stress Awareness Month; it is usually in one’s best interest to set goals or habits to help break the pressures that are creating problems. Some helpful ways to get started on removing stress can be, but aren’t limited to:

  • Start a hobby
  • Change something in your life
  • Adapt a positive outlook on things
  • Live in the moment

When it comes to the actual stress, there are a few methods you can use to alleviate your stress, such as:

  • Exercising
  • Meditation
  • Eating well
  • Talking about your problems

At Advance at Home Physical Therapy in Long Island, we believe that exercise is one of the most effective ways to combat the symptoms of chronic stress. Exercising to relieve stress helps in many ways, including:

  • Promotes simultaneous use of several bodily functions
  • Promotes the body’s creation of endorphins
  • Provides you with rhythm and repetitive movement
  • Promotes a better sleep pattern
  • Promotes human interaction
