Benefits of Staying Active

Staying active is a very important part of keeping our mental and physical health. Unfortunately, as our lives get busier and busier, staying active is sometimes overlooked and is not our priority like it once was. There are many things you can do to stay active whether that includes joining a summer volleyball team with friends, going for a walk every morning, partaking in yoga or pilates, the list goes on. There is no right or wrong as to what you choose in order to stay active, the point is just to stay active. Whatever you decide to partake in,  you will receive the benefits. If you are seeking a physical therapist on Long Island to help you do so, let our team of experts help.

We have listed five reasons why you should remain active:

Your body releases cortisol into your bloodstream which puts you into a “fight or flight” mode to help deal with your body’s response when your body feels excessive stress. However, you tend to gain more weight when there is too much cortisol in your body, and this is caused by frequent high stress. Over time it can also bring you headaches and hypertension. But if you stay active, your body will release endorphins that serve to counteract the cortisol – improving your overall mood and weight.

  • Prevention of Cognitive Decline

There is a part of the brain known as the hippocampus area, this is where our learning takes place, but as we age this part of the brains shrinks. However, we can slow this shrinking process down by increasing the production of new brain cells. This helps offset the cells that are naturally dying off. The best age to reap this great benefit of staying active is between the ages of 25 and 45, but exercising at any age is beneficial.

  • Improved Self-Confidence

Regardless of age, gender, weight, or physical fitness level, exercise makes you feel good about yourself and lifts your self-esteem. If you have a positive self-image, your radiance will exude to those around you making them feel better about themselves also.

  • Controlling Addictions

It’s a no-brainer that many people turn to risky behaviors like smoking, abusing alcohol, or prescription drugs to help them get pass stress. However, while usually meant to be “experimental” and temporary, their use can quickly turn into an addiction, and from addiction to be severe health consequences. Exercising decreases your risk of an abuse turning into an addiction which in turn reduces stress.

Studies show that regular exercise can help boost the brain activity and raise the creative ability to about two hours after working out. You could use that post-exercise period to draw, paint, photograph, write or otherwise exercise your creative spirit.
